In social science the term built environment also known as built world refers to the man-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity ranging in scale from buildings to parks. Roof and Oleru (2008) have defined built environment as "the human-made space in which people live work and recreate on a day-to-day basis". In recent years public health research has expanded the definition of built environment to include access to healthy food community gardens and mental health (Assari et al., 2016) as well as walkability and bikeability (Lee et al., 2012). In landscape architecture the built environment is usually considered as a human-made landscape which differs from the natural environment; for example a city park is classified as a built environment.
